Arthritis and the Hand
The joint at the base of the thumb
is commonly affected. Later, there may be deformity of the thumb. The thumb is
responsible for forty to fifty percent of the overall function of the hand so
pain and deformity in this important digit is very disabling. The finger joints
(middle and end joints) are also commonly affected, causing pain and deformity.
TREATMENT
In the early stage, both forms of arthritis can be controlled. The two main forms
of treatment are anti-inflammatory tablets and rest. During acute episodes of
pain and swelling, the affected joints need to be completely rested by the use
of splints.
Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can cause disabling deformity. Surgery
may be necessary to relieve pain and restore function to the hand so that the
individual can enjoy a reasonable quality of life, doing the things he or she
wants to do.
During the past fifteen to twenty years, major advances have been made in the
surgical treatment of arthritis in the hands. In rheumatoid arthritis, the use
of prosthetic implants has been very successful in restoring function to the hand.
In reconstructive hand surgery, the deformed digits are realigned and useful function
returned to the hand. Therapy is very important following this kind of surgery
to ensure proper return of function.
In the surgical treatment of osteoarthritis, prosthetic implants are occasionally
used in the finger joints. Recently, titanium implants have been used to replace
the diseased joint at the base of the thumb and thus relieve pain and restore
function.
Today, millions of people worldwide have benefited from these advances in the
surgical treatment of arthritis in the hand.
